"An independent supply of magnetic material is a basic prerequisite for European competitiveness in the coming decades"

David Bender, Co-Head Heraeus Remloy

The challenges of using neodymium-iron-boron magnets

  • Indispensable for future technologies: rare earth magnets are the basis for megatrends such as the energy transition or e-mobility.
  • High dependence on imports: Almost 100 per cent of current demand is covered by imports. The majority of this comes from China.
  • Sharp rise in demand: European demand will exceed supply in 2026 and will double by 2030.
  • High impact on people and the environment: 2,300 litres of water are required to mine and process one kilo of rare earth oxide. In addition, up to 2,000 tonnes of toxic waste are produced per tonne of rare earth material.

Our solution

Magnet recycling for an independent European circular economy

With the aim of overcoming these challenges, Heraeus Remloy has developed a future-orientated recycling technology for neodymium-iron-boron magnets. Through our commitment to building a circular economy, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable and secure material supply for an autonomous Europe, reducing environmental impact and supporting technological development. This makes us the bridge to a greener and more self-determined future.
